Update buy-sell agreements to sidestep conflict when physicians leave

By Reed Tinsley   A lot can change in a practice over the course of a few years—the group’s culture can shift, its financial standing may improve or decline, it may lose or gain physicians—and a practice may be setting itself up for financial or legal troubles if it doesn’t keep its buy-sell agreement up-to-date to reflect these changes.   Buy-sell agreements are the cornerstone of most private physician practices because they establish a process...

New rules requiring disclosure of health care pricing

By Beth Anne Jackson and Elizabeth H. Jepson, Brown & Fortunato, P.C.   On November 15, 2019, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued two rules to increase pricing transparency and competition among hospitals, group health plans, and health insurance issuers.  The first rule was issued in final form (the 2020 Pricing Transparency Requirements), and the second was released as a proposed rule...

Making the numbers work: Managing a multi-generational workforce

By Pamela Williams and Felix Digilov, Fisher Phillips   As the United States grows increasingly diverse, so does the American workforce. This diversity is encapsulated not only in race and gender but also in the age of workers. About 27% of 65- to 74-year-olds were employed either full- or part-time in 2016. That number is expected to reach 30% by 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.   The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that,...

Integrative medicine: A holistic educational experience

By Tracy Hu, 4th-year medical student, UTMB, Family Medicine   The fourth year of medical school is a crucial time for exploring different dimensions of one’s chosen field and gaining skills in preparation for residency.  A case in point is my experience taking the Complementary and Integrative Medicine elective (CIM) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).  A four-week course, CIM exposes the learner to complementary and alternative medicine such as acupuncture and herbal...

Texas leaders should oppose policies that threaten Texans’ access to care

By Ted Shaw, President/CEO, Texas Hospital Association   In a world of rapid change, the foundational stability of a business is critical to its survival. A solid financial foundation to support organizational agility and resilience is critical when serious matters such as health — and life — are involved. What if you could not rely on the stability of your local ambulance or fire service?   By the same token, instability tends to have a...

CAR T-cell therapy effective for relapsed mantle cell lymphoma patients

A one-year follow-up study led by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center revealed a majority of patients with mantle cell lymphoma resistant to prior therapies may benefit from treatment with CD19-targeting chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.   The multi-center, Phase II study reported that 93% of patients responded to the CAR T-cell therapy, with 67% achieving a complete response. Forty-three percent of the first 28 patients treated are still in remission over...

Combination therapy results in 98% response rate for some newly diagnosed leukemia patients

A study led by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center showed that treatment combining lower doses of chemotherapy with the monoclonal antibody inotuzumab ozogamicin (INO), with or without the drug blinatumomab, is safe and effective in patients over 60 years of age who were newly diagnosed with a high-risk form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) known as Philadelphia chromosome-negative ALL.   “This study demonstrated that reduced-intensity chemotherapy, when combined with INO, resulted in...
