Cell phone “texting” added to disaster alert system

Cell phone “texting” as a crisis notification tool has been recently tested at St. Joseph Medical Center as part of a national disaster preparedness drill commemorating the eighth anniversary of September 11th.

The SafeAmerica Foundation through its Drill Down for Safety – 9/11 campaign is called on Americans to use September 11th to plan and prepare for emergencies. SafeAmerica is kicked off public service announcements encouraging people to learn how to send text messages this past September 11th. According to SafeAmerica and many cellular phone providers, customers often times can successfully send a text message even when cell phone towers are jammed and cell phone use is limited.

“We are encouraged to add “texting” as another method of alerting hospital personnel during emergency situations,” said Phil Robinson, St. Joseph Medical Center CEO.
